Water Cremation Arrives in Scotland: A Greener Choice for Final Wishes

Scotland has made history by becoming the first part of the UK to legalise water cremation (also known as alkaline hydrolysisresomation or aquamation) with the new regulations coming into force on 2 March 2026. This represents the most significant change to Scottish funeral law in more than a century, offering families a third option alongside burial and cremation.

About Water Cremation

Water cremation is an environmentally friendly method that accelerates natural decomposition. The body is placed in a sealed, pressurised chamber, and heated to around 150°C. Over three to four hours, soft tissues break down, leaving only bone fragments, which are then dried and processed into ashes similar to those from a traditional cremation. The method produces significantly fewer carbon emissions, uses less energy, and avoids the airborne pollutants associated with flame cremation. Many families also regard it as a gentler, more natural process.

Although water cremation became legal in March 2026, the first facilities are expected to become operational summer 2026, pending planning permission and approval from Scottish Water for discharge requirements. Some funeral directors across Scotland, including in Fife, are already in discussions to implement the service once approvals are complete.

Water cremation is entirely optional and deeply personal. As Public Health Minister Jenni Minto emphasised, choices about your remains reflect individual values, beliefs, and environmental preferences.

Is Water Cremation for you?

If you would prefer water cremation, it is essential to document this clearly in your Will and ensure your executors understand your wishes. While funeral preferences are not legally binding in the UK, setting them out in your Will and discussing them with loved ones greatly increases the likelihood that your choices will be respected.

Given that this is a brand new option, many families may not yet be familiar with it. Including explicit instructions in your Will helps avoid uncertainty at an already difficult time.
